Attention deficit disorder commonly referred to as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a mental condition. A person who suffers from ADHD is restless, impulsive, and can’t pay enough attention to details. It is a medical condition that requires proper treatment and therapies. 

A study on ADHD in adults shows that 2.8 per cent of the world population suffers from this condition. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is not a condition you develop when you are an adult. Symptoms and signs of ADHD you should never ignore

The three main signs of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are:

  • Impulsiveness: People who suffer from this medical condition will make decisions without thinking or act on certain things impulsively. 
  • Hyperactivity: If people are overactive, they fidget more or can’t sit/ wait at a place for an extended period. 
  • Hard to pay attention: Having trouble paying attention in a conversation, workplace, or lectures. 

Here’s how you know if you have ADD:

  • You have trouble listening to a person or concentrating on what they are saying.
  • If it hard for you to pay attention in school or at work
  • If you get distracted easily while studying, working, or engaging in activities.
  • It is extremely difficult for you to get organized and remember things like appointments.
  • You often misplace stuff and forget where you put it or lose something like a phone, wallet, or paper.
  • It’s hard for you to wait in line or sit in the same place.
  • You leave your seat even when you are expected there, for instance, in meetings.
  • You can’t wait for people to end their conversation, and sometimes you fill their conversation before them. 
  • You are restless most of the time, feel like you have to do something. 
  • If you fidget, move or tap your hands often.
  • You cut into other people’s conversations and talk excessively. 

Treatment and therapies

Treatments for adults with ADHD include medications, education, social help groups, etc. If you think you are restless, impulsive, or find it hard to pay attention, like the symptoms given above, consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatments. 

Psychological treatments include:

  • Parenting or family therapies.
  • Counseling for improving organizational skills.
  • Time management.
  • Working on relationships.
  • Reducing restlessness and impulsiveness. 

Another major psychotherapy is Cognitive behavioural therapy, which aims to bring changes in daily life habits and helps control thoughts and actions that have a possible impact on your education, relationships, and career. 

Things you can do at home by yourself

Consulting a doctor is the best way to gain control over ADHD; however, there are still things you can do by yourself to get more organized and improve your decision-making ability. 

These are the few preventive measures or remedies you can try by yourself: 

  • Make routines that are convenient for you and follow them every day.
  • Write down your plans and make a do list
  • Set reminders for your tasks and appointments
  • Jot down ideas about your day in a journal 
  • Make sure you complete at least 2 of your tasks a day

By proper routine and habits, you can gain control over the condition to an extent. However, if you think none of this is helping, consider a doctor, therapy, or support group.
