We know that high blood pressure during pregnancy can be scary for you. And your biggest fear will be what it might do to the baby and you. But the risk factors associated with hypertension are so low that in most cases, it won’t affect either the baby or the mother except if it is preeclampsia.

High blood pressure in women during pregnancy is known as gestational hypertension. It usually occurs between 20 weeks after you start carrying the baby to almost three months later. Keep in mind that the risk factors associated with the condition that the chances of high blood pressure in women in the future rise because of gestational hypertension.

Chronic hypertension in women is a condition caused before pregnancy but only diagnosed during or after it. 

Preeclampsia is a condition that can damage your organs like the kidney and the liver. This one comes with a high risk for the baby and mother. It occurs when there is an immediate rise in blood pressure after 20 weeks, and symptoms can sometimes be visible only after childbirth. Signs of the condition include high amounts of protein in your urine, severe headache, loss of vision/blurred vision and nausea/ vomiting. 

For the well being of your baby and you, it is essential to prevent the chances of hypertension. Here are a few things you should do to stave off high blood pressure during pregnancy:

  • Drink enough water.
  • Stay away from smoking and alcohol consumption.
  • Reduce your salt intake
  • A blanched diet is vital. Go for plant-based and home-cooked food.
  • Regular exercise, taking a walk daily, will do good.
  • Consult your doctor regularly
  • Be aware of everything related to pregnancy.
